Language saves from evil

Those who learn the language of a people are safe from their wickedness.

This proverb is so widespread that some (wrongly) assume it is taken from a Hadith.

It may be seen as an encouragement to learn a language. However, its wisdom or truth content seem to me to be rather questionable.
